I checked the coils on the stepper motor when disconnected, both sets of coils seem to be good.
I also increased the current limit to .5
I decreased speed to 100
I connected and tried both a 3V and a 6V external supply
I tested the A & B outputs with a DC motor (both work)
Nothing I do seems to work with a stepper however. In all cases, I can feel the motor move what feels like 1 step and then it just sits there (with an external power supply I can hardly rotate the shaft -- quite impressive torque).
Is there something else I can try? I am not sure the motor is the issue? (It does however make a high pitching whining noise at certain current limit/speed combinations). Again checking the fault status in python seems to not reveal anything (I did not try event based faults).
Thanks for helping me troubleshoot and sorry to bother you with these questions, but at least I'm learning a lot!
